A couple weekends ago we took my in-laws to this bar in Alexandria, Virginia called PX Lounge. It is a swanky bar with custom made drinks. Sounds intriguing, let me explain.
First, you have to make reservations, you can’t just show up. Second, you have to know how to find PX. And you ask, how do you find PX? You look for the blue light!
Once you find the blue light you ring the doorbell and when the slot slides open you provide your name. It’s very 1920′s speak-easy.
You are escorted upstairs to the “lounge” which is comprised of three rooms. One with the bar and two lounge areas on each side. The rooms are surrounded in big white leather couches and illuminated with candles and mirrors from floor to ceiling. The best seat in the house is the bar, where you can watch all the magic happen.
Todd Thrasher is the master behind the mixes. His juices and bitters are hand made. Each drink has it’s own special ice cube, for instance he makes tonic ice cubes so when they melt your drink isn’t watered down. He uses very unusual ingredients in the drinks like basil and tobacco (not in the same drink). Speaking of drinks here is a sneak peak of the menu.
So what did we have? I had a peach cocktail (PX had a swankier name for it) which was refreshing and went down to easy. My mother-in-law had the PC Champagne Cocktail that had a cherry flavor to it. My father-in-law had the Grog which was voted the best by the group. For the second round my father-in-law had a gin and tonic which he and my husband declared the best gin and tonic ever and promptly ordered another. My husband had a blueberry and absinthe cocktail. If you’ve never had absinthe I highly recommend it but keep a chaser ready because the licorice flavor is unbearable. And as you can tell each drink has its own glass.
It was a very fun night and a great experience. If you are ever in and around the D.C. area, I highly recommend it.
